Servant To All Neighbors

STAN's Farmers Market

Fresh food. Local roots. A place to gather. A community-based farmers market created to provide affordable, locally grown produce — and to honor a legacy of service that runs deep in Hayti.

What STAN stands for.

More than an acronym — it's the life Stanley Smith lived, and the way we aim to serve our neighbors every day.

From the Ground Up

Built by hands. Grown with purpose.

Before there was a market, there was a field. Before there was a harvest, there was the work. Every basket of produce starts with the labor of community members committed to feeding their own neighbors.

Stanley Smith.

A life of service — and the heart this market carries forward.

Stanley Smith was a man who gave. A veteran of both the United States Army and Navy, he spent his career lifting others — over a decade at Wal-Mart greeting customers with warmth, and more than 20 years at Hayti R-2 School District as a custodian, where students and teachers alike knew him by name.

He loved the St. Louis Cardinals. He solved crosswords. He sat and watched Jeopardy faithfully. And more than anything, he grew things — vegetables, yes, but also people. Neighbors. Kids passing through the cafeteria line. Anyone fortunate enough to stand near him long enough to feel seen.

He didn't just grow vegetables. He grew confidence in others.

Stanley passed away before he could see this market open. STAN's Farmers Market carries his name, his initials, and — we pray — his spirit. Every basket of tomatoes, every conversation by the tables, every neighbor fed is an extension of the service he lived.

Hayti farmers market to bring fresh produce to underserved community

KFVS12 reporter Ellie Mueller spoke with Programs Director Cora Sanders about the food access crisis in Pemiscot County and the vision behind STAN’s Market. Sanders described Hayti as a food desert where the nearest major grocery stores sit about 17 miles away in Kennett, leaving many families — and one in four children — without reliable access to fresh food.

The piece covers how the market will do more than feed families: it’s also expected to create jobs for local growers, market staff, and a community health worker who’ll help neighbors learn how to source and prepare fresh produce. Sanders also shared the story of Stanley Smith, the neighbor whose vision gave the market its name.

“Food access is probably some of the lowest in the states.” — Cora Sanders, Programs Director, to KFVS12
